I offer glimpses into the everyday life of Dubai’s various expatriate residents—Arabs, Filipinos and South Asians who call the city home. Despite the decisions made by those above for “the down below” (in reference to the essay ‘Walking in the City’ by Michel de Certeau), they instinctively continue to find emotional resonance amidst their shifting surroundings.In the installation, I juxtapose the softness of memory with hard, metal structures. The structures reference the construction fences that are a constant in the UAE. In contrast to these industrially-built fences, I hand-bend and weld steel to form my own interpretation of them. Their uneven corrugated pattern causes them to appear to shift, rendering them more unstable and susceptible to change just like the city they belong to.Overlaid on these steel “fences”, I project hand-drawn animations, archival family footage and ground-level footage all set in Dubai that depict very personal, very specific memories of the city. I draw a parallel between the phenomenon of light and our internal memory landscape; much like how people enliven architectural space, the light transforms the fences into canvases for memories to latch onto. I designed the soundscape by striking the steel structures found in the installation. This story draws some truth from the Arabic term Barzakh, the closest term being purgatory i.e. the liminal space where souls go to before they met their creator. This was one of the earliest instances where I grew conscious of the potential of a spiritual plane separate from the familiar physical plane, sparking a lifelong intrigue surrounding the intangible forces, hidden in plain sight, that occupy everyday life.The artwork explores how dreams reach through and beyond our bodies, deep into our subsonscious to generate something hyperreal. Through repeatedly drawing animation frames by hand, entering a trance-like state, I wrestle between lucidity and submission. the familiar architecture of migrants’ homes had on their sense of identity? Equally, what effect has settling in the new built environment had on their well-being? I just want to keep was made in collaboration with with the Refugee Dream Center, a resettlement agency founded and run by refugees in Providence, Rhode Island. For two months, I was welcomed into the homes of two Syrian families through volunteering to teach them English. I also frequented the center, grew closer with the staff and occasionally joined in their programming. I invited them to draw maps from memory with me, of neighborhoods lived and loved.I listened closely for clues on how they adapted to their new environment, and what traces of home they still carried. At the end of each day I took home the fragments of our conversations and reimagined them with my own brush. This led to a series of paintings that operate as a portrait of their experience of change. I just want to keep Single-channel video, 2 mins 11 seconds, color, sound, canvas paper strips2023To elaborate on this transitional phase in their lives, I wove the paintings together in a stop motion animation. I printed all of the paintings on heavy duty canvas paper, cut them into strips then interlaced them together while the refugees recounted their stories. The various places and memories mesh together all creating a disorienting experience where connotations of place are inextricably linked. I built a wooden model of the map using laser-cut wood, then created a plastic mold of the model using vacuum forming.&nbsp;The plastic model map was then UV printed with a current Google Maps image of my aunt’s neighborhood, after decades of renovation. The process of vaccuum forming this map caused the plastic to crack around the elevations of the wooden model, creating topographic contours that indicated the presence of the past layout of the neighborhood, mapping its change as felt and visceral. As I peeled off the plastic, I also damaged the wooden model, echoing the gaps in my own memory and the gashes that these changes leave. I shed light into the complex relationship of an expatriate with their country of residence, with no ability to sway the municipality in its decision to demolish and rebuild the city beyond recognition.
